SIMILAJAU NATIONAL PARK
Departure time : Daily At 8.30am Via Bintulu or Miri
Duration : Full Day
Although Similajau National Park was gazetted in 1978, it was only opened to visitors in 1995. The park is situated 20-km northeast of the town of Bintulu and covers an area of 7067 hectares. Similajau's main attractions are the geological features of its coast, its long sandy beaches and its tropical rainforest. The park offers many activities; the most popular of which are jungle trekking on well-marked trails, river and coastal cruises and bird watching.
Wide-open spaces provide bird-watchers with excellent opportunities to see some of the 185 species that have been recorded in the park. Hornbills and sea eagles are commonly sighted. 24 species of mammals are found in the park. Most of these remain hidden in the rainforest but wild boars and macaque monkeys are often seen strolling along the beaches. The park is also home to the estuarine crocodile, and green turtles sometimes come ashore to lay their eggs.
